Area of glaciers
Median annual temperature
Glaciers in Austria are distributed all over the Austrian Alps and concentrated to the west of the country. Across the Alps, glaciers have lost half their volume, and since 1980 melting has only accelerated. Scientists claim that The Alps are the worst hit mountains and at this continuing rate, all alpine glaciers would be gone by the end of this century. Glacier melting has repercussions for alpine tourism putting towns and tourists in the areas at risk; the challenge, warning people in the event of collapse or natural emergency.
