Additional Data

Glaciers in France are concentrated in the French Alps as well as in the Pyrenees. In total, they extend about 275 km², 20% less than in 1985 when glacier extension was 340 km², and 26% less than at the end of the 1960s when glacier coverage was about 375 km². Mer de Glace, or Sea of Ice, is France’s largest glacier and the second largest in the Alps. It is expected to shrink dramatically in the coming decades; along with the Argentière glacier, France’s second greatest glacier, both have lost around 800 meters in length in the past three decades.
