Glaciers in Uzbekistan occur in the east of the country, in the Tien-Shan and the Gissar-Alay mountains forming the highest peaks, with an approximate area of 80 km². Although glaciers in Uzbekistan have a significant role in local and regional water resources, according to the World Glacier Monitoring Service, the country lacks enough detailed information on them. However, a recent study on glacial lakes in the country has shown signs of hazard with their potential overflow.
