Most glaciers in Iran are concentrated in the north of the country, in the Elburz mountains and on one volcano, covering an area of about 27 km². Until today, information on glacier changes in Iran is next to nonexistent, according to the World Glacier Monitoring System the country lacks the monitoring resources although their impact is highly significant on local and regional water supply. About 60% of the country’s water resources for urban industries and agriculture depend on natural glaciers.
