The total surface area of all glaciers, glacierets, and permanent snowfields in Italy with an area of 608 km². Yet over the past 100 years, climate change has led to halving the total surface area of Alpine glaciers located in Europe’s highest peaks, and it’s highly probable than glaciers under an altitude of 3,500 m will mostly vanish within the next 30 years.
